In the world of design, making a message resonate isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about connection. How do we create visuals that bridge the gap between the one conveying a message and the audience meant to receive it?
This article explains my design method, Make People Care, which aims to build meaningful connections through a balanced approach.
Whether you’re new to design or a seasoned communicator, I hope this gives you practical insights into how to make your content accessible, engaging, and genuinely impactful.
Defining Make People Care
My method combines three key aspects:
1. Audience preferences – what matters to them, what they relate to, the colours, styles, and language they respond to, the channels they use, and any potential barriers to understanding.
2. The sender’s message and values – what I want to say or convey, as well as how I align with the message’s intent.
3. The technical specifications of the media – whether it’s digital or printed, the size, colours, production details, and deadline constraints.
Make People Care brings these three elements together to form a seamless connection between the creator and the audience, resulting in designs that not only convey information but also foster a memorable bond.
Who’s it for?
This approach is ideal for those wanting their designs to go beyond aesthetics, fostering genuine engagement and accessibility.
How Make People Care stands out
While there are many ways to approach design, Make People Care makes an impact by being both people-focused and message-driven. Designs created with this approach not only resonate more with the audience but also reflect the creator’s message and intent, resulting in a unique bond.
Consider these examples: a design focused solely on audience preferences may feel generic, lacking personality. One that only represents the sender may come off as inaccessible. And a design centred solely on media specifications often loses impact, failing to connect emotionally.
In Make People Care, we strive for balance so the final piece is both engaging and authentic.
Why I developed Make People Care
Over the years, I gradually shaped Make People Care as I worked with different clients, audiences, and media, learning from each unique context. My background in brand design taught me the value of connection – how a brand must represent the company’s values while resonating with the audience.
I was also lucky to have a great mentor, Diego Feijóo, who taught me the importance of unique visual messages and accessibility. Brand design, like compressing a brand’s identity onto a 5 mm space on a ball pen, taught me how to distill complex messages into impactful, simple designs.
The goal of Make People Care
The ultimate aim of Make People Care is to help you create designs that authentically communicate your message while being highly accessible to your intended audience. This method supports building lasting connections, making your content more memorable and impactful.
