12 of 12: A day in January 2022

12 of 12 is a (German 🤔?) blog tradition where you document the 12th of a month with 12 photos.

1/12: It’s midnight. I can’t sleep. Is it because of the Thai milk tea I drank in the morning? At least I use the time to plan my week and the rest of the year. And I decided to give it a try and write my first blog article in English. Since I have been saying for quite some time that I want to work internationally, I realised that it would be difficult to do it in German.
2/12: Finished my theme of the year blog post 😅🙄. It’s 2 am. Still four hours of sleep ahead. Let’s try it. I guess I just ate too little during the day, and now the hungry stomach keeps me awake.
3/12: The morning is busy. I am forcing myself out of the warm bed after lying in it for an hour (my morning routine 😆). I take a shower, prepare breakfast for my son and me, take a corona self-test (which is negative 👍), and get ready to leave the house.
4/12: I accompany my son on his way to school and try to sound as enthusiastic, as him, when he mentions that he looks forward to playing his new video game. I carry my bike to the metro station nearby.
5/12: The morning is beautiful. Love this part of my way to work.
6/12: I get off the metro and bike to the garage of the Max Plack Institute of Biophysics. It’s on a campus with several universities and other scientific institutes. Love the car free environment. It’s so peaceful.
7/12: Since May last year, I work as a brand strategist and visual storyteller at the Institute. The place suits me well: nice people and an international work environment. I believe I have one of the nicest offices of the Institute.
8/12: In the kitchen I take the new issue of MAX, the community magazine of the Max Planck Society. I am happy to see that the photo I shot of PhD student Pamela for her interview on Open Science was selected by the editors.
9/12: After the meeting in the morning and before the meeting in the afternoon, I need some nourishing food. For now, meat is my most effective energy provider. The portions are huge though, so I come prepared with an empty jar for the other half of the dish.
10/12: In the evening, I turn on some quiet electronic music and continue to scan through hundreds of photos I took during the introductory week of our new PhD program. I select the ones where people look good and confident.
11/12: I finally decide to stop working. I change clothes and hop on my bike. It’s approximately 10 kilometres to home. Not really looking forward to bike through the dark cold evening, but I know my body and mind needs exercise.
12/12: At home it’s 8 pm. I give myself an hour of rest and then start to cook some vegetables to accompany my son’s leftovers from yesterday, rice and a sausage. While waiting for the vegetables to cook, I lie on the bed and put sweet and crisp grapes into my mouth – life is good!
