12 of 12: A day in September 2023

It’s the 12th of September. Time to document the day with 12 photos. I work from home today. Life is good. I am healthy, I am safe, and my job as a designer is to create joy.

1/12: I’m tired, because I was reading a crime story until very late. While having breakfast, my son looks at the almost naked wall of my kitchen. He wants to know why I took down all the pictures. I say: “I want to put new pictures.” My son enthusiastically says: “Yes! We can hang Minecraft pictures!”
2/12: As we haven’t adapted to the new school schedule yet, we are late for school. We run. This is a good warmup for the run in the park afterwards. It’s the first time I go running after many weeks.
3/12: Which shoes to wear? I asked myself beforehand. I am glad I haven’t thrown away my old Chucks. Cheaper and more sustainable than any new running or barefoot shoes 😁.
4/12: I work from home today. The first project I dedicate my time to is the augmented reality (AR) installation. I want to design a poster and a flyer broad audiences can use to understand what my employer, the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, does. I check on the AR cell we have developed some months ago.
5/12: I create a quick draft of the poster. The cell is at the centre of the poster – the link to almost all research projects of the Institute.
6/12: I make a selection for our profile for the report from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. I try to find a photo (right) that visually stands out of the usual photos (left) and that communicates warmth and fun.
7/12: It’s time to make a kids-friendly lunch for my son. He comes back from school. I enjoy him telling me about his media day they had at school today. Glad to hear that the teacher chose computer games to educate them about internet fraud and bullying. During the whole afternoon, he can’t stop talking about the things he did and has learned ❤️.
8/12: After lunch, I start to make a first draft of the presentation slide for the defence of the grant application. The goal is to show how we use digital communications efficiently to effectively reach a broad audience.
9/12: Afterwards, I prepare the social media plan for our upcoming Symposium of Cellular Biophysics that starts on Friday.
10/12: I continue to develop the design of the poster. It’s still too serious. I will add more joy in a next step.
11/12: In the evening, I prepare dinner and fight with my son over household chores. Finally – I had to get over myself quite a bit – I decide to order this dishwasher. After many years of hand washing 😅.
12/12: In bed, I continue to read my crime story. I think of reading it until the end, but I am too tired. I switch off the light and lie down. I love how my son sleeps next to me ❤️.
